Murtuza Mukhtarov
Murtuza Mukhtarov (1865-1920) was born in Khila, a small settlement near Baku that is now known as Amirjan. The famous Azerbaijani millionaire, philanthropist was a prominent representative of the Azerbaijani oil industry. He was known as an entrepreneur who concentrated much of the contract drilling in the oil industry. Mukhtarov was involved in numerous charitable activities and never shied away from donating money to the construction of public buildings and schools. Murtuza Mukhtarov also worked as the founder of Baku Realni School, Temir Khan-Shura Women Gymnasium, and as an honorary member of the society for the dissemination of technical knowledge. He was also an honorary member of the Muslim Charitable Society in St. Petersburg, the founder of forty scholarships for students of higher and secondary schools. He was a visionary who saw the future of the people only in enlightenment. Murtuza Mukhtarov was an admirer of Western European culture, who fought against superstition in the society, for this purpose he published "Taraggi" newspaper and built schools in Baku. He was known as a benevolent, kind person and a serious entrepreneur.The millionaires, who appeared after the development of the oil industry in the country at their time, became the real "architects" of the ancient city. This mosque is still considered one of the largest mosques in the North Caucasus.
